One Road In: The Palakkad Gap
The Western Ghats run almost unbroken along Kerala’s eastern edge, and the practical opening for a loaded carrier is the Palakkad gap. Cars arriving from Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad or the north come through it and then fan out along NH 66 up and down the coast.
This matters for planning rather than for price. It means the approach into Kerala is predictable and the internal distribution is not: a car for Kozhikode and a car for Thiruvananthapuram enter at the same point and then travel four hundred kilometres apart. We tell you which end of the state you are on and what that adds.
Why the Last Two Kilometres Need a Smaller Truck
Kerala has among the highest car densities in India and among the narrowest residential lanes. Compound walls sit close to the road, electric and cable lines hang low, and turning circles are tight. An eleven-car trailer cannot use them, and a driver who tries will either scrape a wall or block a street.
So delivery is a two-stage operation as standard: the trunk carrier reaches a yard near Kochi, Kozhikode or Thiruvananthapuram, and a feeder truck brings the car to your gate. We book that feeder slot before the carrier departs. It is inside the quoted price, and it is the single most common thing other operators leave out until the car has already arrived.
June to September, and Then Again in October
Kerala has two rainy seasons, and both affect car movement. The south-west monsoon from June to September is the heavy one; the north-east monsoon in October and November is shorter but can flood low-lying roads around Alappuzha and Kuttanad quickly.
Carriers keep running through both. What changes is the certainty of the delivery morning rather than the transit itself — a feeder truck will not attempt a waterlogged lane, and we would rather hold the car dry at the yard for a day than float it to your gate.
